Welcome to Leather Wise and introductions
A chance to learn a little about each other…
Where does it all begin and why do we inherit problems?
The skins and hides we use are sourced from many places and
can be subject to natural and manmade damage. We will look
at some typical problems.
Why do we make upholstery leather from cowhide?
There are many reasons for choosing certain hides and skins
for making different types of leather. We will look at
the various attributes and pitfalls, particularly those
affecting the manufacturing process.
Time for a well earned cuppa!
Visit
to a nearby tannery
We will visit a tannery and see leather being made. This
will give you an opportunity to see the equipment and how
it works.
Buffet lunch (and time to phone work!)
Recap on key leather production stages and all the associated
industry jargon
Once we have seen the various stages of leather production
and looked at the laboratories you will realise how complex
leather making is. We will briefly review the main production
stages then look in more detail at the different types of
leather we can produce: aniline, semi-aniline, pigmented,
nubuck, suede, bi-cast, oily pull-ups etc.
Time for another cuppa!
What
do we officially mean by the term ‘Leather’?
How can we look after it and what issues are there for those
involved in Quality Assurance and Customer Services ?
We all take leather for granted and use it everyday, but
do we really know what it is and what characteristics it
has? For anyone using and supplying leather and leather products
it is important to understand what you can (and can’t)
do legally. This also leads us to consider what happens when
it all goes wrong? We will use examples to illustrate typical
problems that you might encounter.
Time to go home after a busy day!
